When we normally go about planning our holidays we normally book everything individually. It may mean it takes us slightly longer to get things organised but it normally works out for us, and sometimes it means it is cheaper. However when we were planning our holiday for October 2015 we decided to pick Thomson to see what it was like to use a tour operator to help us book everything.
We headed down to our local shopping centre where Thomson have two stores (honestly don’t know why they have two but they do!) We only had to wait about 5 minutes to get seen but we sat down and started to talk with the staff member on what we were looking for. She was very professional and asked us a bunch of questions to see which countries we didn’t want to visit, how old our boys were, the type of hotel we were looking for etc.
After about 20-30 minutes we had narrowed it down to 2 countries – Majorca and Ibiza. She priced up two hotels which were in our budget and then we could compare them. To be honest there wasn’t much price wise between them. We decided Majorca based on the flight times. If we had decided to go to Ibiza it would have meant we would have had to get up at about 3 in the morning which for us is a big no no.
Lots of people will say to book flights for when your children sleep but to be honest it never works for our kids (don’t ask me why as I have no idea! ha!) Our flight times for Majorca were leave Edinburgh at about 3pm and land in Majorca at 7pm. Leaving Majorca the flight times were leave at 8pm and get back to Edinburgh about 10pm. We also decided to book a private transfer from the airport instead of getting a coach. For us this was the best decision we made.
Overall we found Thomson to be a great help. The staff in-store were so friendly and helpful and made us feel so comfortable.
We had a slight problem afterwards with the private transfer; at first it was booked through Thomson via a 3 party but they cancelled and we were told they couldn’t take a family! So Thomson booked the transfer through them for slightly cheaper. Then we were told that we would only be able to take 2 suitcases along with our pram as they couldn’t guarantee the size of the taxi that would be taking us.
This was our only stressful part as technically we had paid for 3 suitcases but we did as we were told and took 2 suitcases along with our pram. Our taxi was a Mercedes Viano; which was huge. Although a plus point our taxi driver was great and he had car seats for the kids which we were not expecting.
While on holiday in Majorca we found the staff were very friendly and always spoke to our eldest son if he kicked up a conversation with them. However sometimes they did lack in trying to solve problems when we had asked for help. This didn’t put us off though and we would 100% use Thomson again in the future if we decide to do another All Inclusive holiday.
Our top 3 tips if you are going to go into your local Thomson store
- Have an idea on your ideal budget
- Have a rough idea of where you want to go or don’t/wont go to
- If you can afford it go for a private transfer, for us it was so much better.
If you do book instore then if you need to make any changes or have any questions about your booking then you have to go in-store again. You can’t go online to make changes. Are you thinking about booking a family holiday with Thomson? Or have you been on holiday before we Thomson. We would love to hear your stories.
