This was our first time in Majorca (Mallorca) and I have to say it is a great family holiday destination. It has pretty good weather all year round (with high teens over the winter period) which makes it perfect for some winter sun. It is also only a short haul flight from the UK (3 hours from Edinburgh which is where we fly from). This makes it great if your into cycling, walking or just want to great away from the UK to get to somewhere a bit warmer.
There are also many things to do while you are there which is why we decided to choose it as our family holiday. We booked a package deal through Thomson Holidays. For a weeks holiday in October at a 3 star hotel near Playa de Muro in Majorca, it cost us just over £1600. This included for a family of 4 (2 adults, 1 child, and 1 infant) family travel insurance, all inclusive for a week, a cot, flights, and 2 private transfers. We only took 400 euros of spending money with us and came back with about 80 euros. We had pre-booked our 3 excursions though. Hopefully this gives you a rough idea on costs. Public buses are very cheap and a great way of getting round.
Here is what we ended up doing for ours weeks Family Holiday
Day 1: Travelling from Edinburgh to Majorca.
We didn’t tell our eldest son we were going on holiday until the morning we left. He face was priceless. It then meant I had 2 stressful hours of packing trying to get all our stuff together and within the weight limits..oops. Our flight didnt leave Edinburgh until after 3pm so we managed to get lunch at the airport. Only problem we faced was 2 hungry kids by the time we got to the hotel which was after 8pm. Tired and hungry kids are not good!
Day 2: Free day so we did beach and then a bus to Port d’Alcudia.
The public buses are so cheap here compared to Scotland. We went for a walk about the port and took some pictures of some of the big boats and yachts. I dont know who was more excited my husband or our eldest son! Read more here
Day 3: Palma Aquarium
We had pre-booked an excursion with No Frills Excursions. It was a great day out and our separate review can be read here.
Day 4: Free day so we took the bus again to Alcudia Old Town and then bus to Puerto Pollensa
This time we went a bit further around the coast on the public buses. They are so cheap (compared to back home) and the kids were free so why not? Alcudia Old Town is very pretty and it was very quiet when we got there (We went in October so I dont know what it would be like in peak season). We just went for a walk around and then got the bus to Puerto Pollensa. We went for another walk and a look around but there didn’t seem to be much there (although we hadnt looked up what was about in the area so we could have missed things) You can read more here.
Day 5: Island Tour by Bus, Boat, Tram and Train
We had pre-booked this excursion with No Frills Excursions. It was a great day out and you can read our review here
Day 6: Another free day
We let our eldest son go to kids club while we went for a walk. The reps were great and our eldest son enjoyed his morning session so much. We then hired a 4 seater bike and went for a ride! Never again, it was exhausting! In the evening we had paid 10 euros for our eldest son to go to a pizza party with the kids club. From 6pm til 9pm. He had a blast and made loads of things. Thomson definitely seem to do kids club well!
Day 7: Our last day so we went to Marineland
We had pre-booked this excursion with No Frills Excursions. To read our review of Marineland follow the link.
Day 8: Departure day
We spent day around hotel (I did our washing so we went home with clean clothes! I hate going home with dirty clothes to then have to wash when back home!) and local area before getting taken to the airport at 5pm.
There are so many places that we didn’t get to see during our week away but we are definitely planning on going back at some point in the future; we will more than likely take my parents. There is so much to explore which is why it makes such a great family holiday destination.
As anyone else been to Majorca? If so what were your favorite things to do?
