How To Decide Where To Travel To Next

With such a huge bucket list, it is definitely a touch job to decide on where to travel to next. So, how do we go about picking our next destination? Here are our tips on how we decide where to travel to next (you don’t have to do them in the same order)

How To Decide Where To Travel Next

We have such a small date range due to the nature of our businesses, so choosing our dates is normally our top pick. We can normally do dates around Easter, or the October break. We quickly check our local councils website for school term dates for the next year so we can write down a list of dates. TIP: Write down a list of possible date ranges which you can then search holidays on. If you don’t have specific date ranges then don’t worry.

Flying or Driving

We also try to decide if we will do a road trip or if we intend to fly. The last few years we have done road trips and taken the boat across to mainland Europe instead of flying. Again once you have decided which you prefer then you can then go about the next stages. Tip: Check as many options as possible from different routes by ferry to different airlines.

Self Catering/All Inclusive

We have done a few All Inclusive holidays in the last few years. However, we tend to enjoy the freedom of self catering.  If you can’t decide then don’t worry you could decide when searching and see what the prices are like.

Narrow Down Search

We then look at places we would like to visit, and availability over the chosen dates we have. We then write down a list of prices, and dates (also any extra info like all inclusive etc) for roughly 3 or 4 destinations. Tip: Do a bit of research and if flying check all possible flight options. You may find a different airlines offers a cheaper price.

We (or should I say I) then look at our travel budget and see if there are any that are too expensive. These then get scored off the list. Tip: Remember your budget should include things like travel insurance, food allowances, petrol if driving, car hire, pet boarding, excursions etc.

Time To Pick

Once we have our list narrowed down, we sit down and decide which option would be the best. Once we have picked one we then set about booking it up quickly so we don’t miss out.

2017 is a busy year for travel. However, a number of them are business trips which means our holiday budget hasn’t been affected too much. We have a dedicated holiday bank account, which we put a set amount in each month.

  1. There are some really good tips here. One I would suggest is that taking out annual cover for multiple trips often doesn’t work out any more, or at least not much more, than a single trip cover. We go through Compare the Market and, as an example, I’ve just insured 10 of us (we have to do it in two lots as there are so many of us), for just under £70. That’s worldwide travel for multiple trips for up to 60 days at a time (because we travel for a couple of months at a time), for one adult and nine children between the ages of 17 and 3. We insured another three family members (1 adult and 2 children) for £18 (multiple trip cover, 60 day duration for each etc). Both insurers have 4 star defacto ratings which is reassuring also.

  2. I base it primarily on airfare and cost of lodging and usually everything else falls into place. If I can get a good airfare deal for the 4 of us, that gives a bit of wiggle room in the budget. I usually look to maximize our travel budget. Sweden wasn’t really on the radar until I saw really good fares. So here we are! 🙂 Generally, I disregard school schedules as I figure the travel experience outweighs lost class time.

    1. Its good hearing from other people how they decide where to go. Always best to try maximize the travel budget as much as possible. Can mean more ice creams while away! Ha!
